How to stand up to the issues that plague humanity and return to basics?
It is possible? Has there ever been a humanity without issues? Has there ever even been one human without issues? Why do expect things to get better? How come we try and avoid the apocalypse? It’s always been coming, always been just around the corner, and always been the end of human suffering (or just the beginning depending on how you see things).
Why do I stop myself from living a hedonistic lifestyle? Why don’t I rape any pretty little thing that comes my way? Why don’t I shit on my friends and family, and steal from the poor? I mean why not? None of that shit will matter in a just a little while anyway.
Do I try and life a morally upstanding and ‘good’ life so that I can condescend over the masses? Is it because I like to feel better than everybody else around me? Maybe, maybe not. I get satisfaction out of being good…sometimes. But you know all that shit about nice guys finish last, and no good dead goes unpunished, so why put up with it all? Maybe in order to truely live good, we have to be bad, abandon morals, do drugs and steal from women and children. I mean morality hasn’t gotten us anywhere yet, so why not try a different approach?
Who wins in a fight between God and the Devil? Neither have won yet, so I’m not going to stake my life on either one until it’s conclusively decided. I’m going to win by playing God and the Devil against eachother, once they’re busy fighting eachother I can come in and seize power. Then I’ll relinquish the power when it feels right to save my soul.
I’m sure everyone remembers Bart Simpson who made us all realize that we can all get into heaven even after a life of sin as long as we redeem ourselves before we die. Maybe, maybe not.

I don’t think our current society is very moral, people really just look out for themselves. I also think our society is very hedonistic, certainly not to the point of socially acceptable rape, but we live to party and eat good food and drink and watch tv and sit on our asses. Our entire culture/society is geared towards making things more comfortable and convenient and luxurious, all at the expense of the environment and people in the third world. I think perhaps what we need are some morals

I’m talking about ideals. The ideal America is good and moral. But why should ourt ideals be so characteristicly non-human, false, and unattainable.
Why should we try to strive for something attainable. Make baby steps. Accomplish something with in our reach so that we can feel good about something instead of failing to reach our ideal all the time.

So, i think the question you are raising is weather people should have lofty ideals or not, weather we should strive to be better, or simply be what we are. One part of me says we should try to be better than we are, but another part says we shouldn’t. I think maybe having high ideals isn’t such a bad thing, it’s almost like having a long term goal for humanity, as long as we acknowledge they they are ideals and don’t expect people to perfectly live up to them

you gotta have the lofty goals and ideals, you just have to hold yourself to them at relative distances. for example, you care about the fact that bush is whack, and he does shit that pisses you off, and you do what you can in your life to counteract him- talking about it with people, writing shit online, etc. but you can’t kill yourself with it or let it consume you. first you have to be happy in yourself, then you can go do other things and affect change, possibly even on the larger scale. but keep a small scope, affect change in places where it can be more easily and visibly affected. there are world problems, and while we must strive to be aware of them and help in ways that we can and are moved to, we must also not let those things deter us from arriving at our own sense of well being.
