How is it that I can analyze and wonder, “Why did I do that?” Shouldn’t I already know?

Wouldn’t it have been a shocking coincidence if the first self-aware systems had been perfectly self-aware? It would be as though the first mobile systems immediately mastered teleportation. Walk before you run.
