Drugs are for Pussies
Nicotine is much like caffeine. It is a stimulant, so it allows people to focus on things things that they hate. It also kills people, probably more than any other drug, but it doesn’t cause people to kill in moments of passionate anger and violence like alcohol does, no, it kills you slowly and insidiously, sabotaging every system in your body from the the inside.
Those are the three biggies but there is one more on the list, and that is the wide variety of prescription drugs available to this community. Since they are so various they are hard to classify, but here are two main types: there are stimulants that perform the same function as nicotine and caffeine(ritalin, adderall, provigil, etc.), and there are antidepressants which make people happy without changing the circumstances that caused them to be unhappy in the first place (giving Christianity to slaves?).
So there you have it, the drugs that are legal in this country are the ones that stupefy, make people shortsighted, make people into better robots, and generally make people content with a bad thing. While the ones that are illegal are the ones that promote creativity, open minds to new possibilities, and make people want to change a bad situation and make it into a good one. I’d like to close this little diatribe by saying that I don’t think any drugs are inherently bad and that they can all have good uses including the ones that I have blasted here today. But I do recommend that people do as Nate Dogg suggests and smoke weed every day…at least for a few years.

Your closing tag reminds me: Carlin pointed out, when he appeared on Inside the Actors Studio, that if you smoke pot all the time, the pot will eventually suggest to you that you stop smoking pot all the time.
Obviously it doesn’t work that way for everyone, but think of the number of old winos vs. old potheads–he’s on to something. Which is another reason (besides the others you hit, which are right on) that you couldn’t use pot as soma.

If only more people thought like you I could walk into my mom and pop store and buy a pack of joints. The day will come, once the goverment understands how to control it and tax it, until then thank god for dealers, whose risk it everday to bring us the bud.

Interesting post.
The indigenous people around the world used marijuana (and continue to) for healing and enlightenment. The U.S. government does not want its people enlightened – that puts them at risk! Drugs and substances which keep people controllable will be always be supported until we as Americans awaken.

Ahh what a refreshing post
After a huge weekend, I coincidently posted a drugrelated post. I agree with ya 100%
Don’t you hate arguing that Alcohol is alot more harmful than substances deemed illegal by society. Oh how ignorance makes my blood boil

As an old hippie, I am somewhat qualified to talk about this issue. Caffeine? You’ve got to be kidding me. How can you compare caffeine to marijuana? The mind altering is totally different. I’ve never gotten silly and hungry from coffee. Mushrooms? Seriously. Very mind altering, for sure. There aren’t enough to go around, though, and besides, why would the government ever agree to add any more mind altering substances to its list it already has? Like, the government would ever sanction the use of any drugs other than what a doctor prescribes. Even then, in most states, you can be charged with a DUI. Ever wonder why its not DWI anymore. Under the influence means from anything that alters normal reasoning. as far as marijuana, I have no problem with it, other than long term affects on the lungs. Tobacco’s no good for you. You think smoking pot is like eating cotton candy? Won’t ever hurt you?

Let me see if I get this straight, because there’s already mind altering vices, and I’m just musing here, that are legal we should legalize another one – that being marijuana? Two wrongs, assuming it is wrong and ancient Berserker Gangs don’t count for using mushrooms before battle, can’t possibly make a right? Right? Jonathan Richman said it best when he said “…if they’re really so great , tell me why then they at least take this place and take it straight? Why always stoned like Hippie Johnny…?” Humans hate moderation.

I’ve always considered the legalisation of pot a great idea. I could be so successful if most other people were too stoned to think, let alone accomplish anything. Why, I could take over the world!
Comment by Random Personae — On 07-18-05 at 11:44 pm
Here, here!! Now if we could just get everybody stoned, like in a Cheech and Chong movie, where the van filled with pot burns and the whole town gets stoned, maybe we could have a REAL discussion about how much better the world would be if we all had a bong hit every morning.

The dogmatic assertions you make in your post about caffiene and alchohol point up a certain narrow mindedness on your part. I assume you’re a regular pot smoker, so why hasn’t pot smoking broadened your horizons and opened your mind as you claim it does for others?
Comment by Jack Jones — On 07-19-05 at 1:51 pm
So true. Marajuana is much better than alcohol.

“Let me see if I get this straight, because there’s already mind altering vices, and I’m just musing here, that are legal we should legalize another one – that being marijuana?”
I’m not saying that mind-altering substances are bad in principle, I’m saying the ones that are legal are currently altering minds in bad ways. Having one’s mind altered can be a good or a bad thing.
” I assume you’re a regular pot smoker, so why hasn’t pot smoking broadened your horizons and opened your mind as you claim it does for others?”
I don’t believe that caffeine or alcohol are inherently bad, I think that they play a bad role in our society, being open-minded doesn’t mean you can’t form opinions. In the right time and place alcohol and caffeine can be good, but overall in this country, how helpful are they really? Complacency is a terrible thing.

God gave us free will to decide whether or not we want to take drugs. The government took away our free will. Every American should be angry about our God given right…
Now, what was I writing about? :-}

Right on. Hilarious the comment about you should be open minded… I guess you could also argue using that logic “if you smoke so much pot, why aren’t you open minded enough to support the Klu Klux Klan???” LMAO.

But drugs can be harmful, who wants to take drugs and end up with a mental illness?
Comment by Me — On 07-20-05 at 6:41 pm
Living is harmful period. Everything you do uses up a little life. Drug use does not guarantee the development of a mental illness, you can get a mental illness from absolutely nothing at all. So not doing something because there is the slight possibility it may cause you harm doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
Comment by Prof. Snafu Halitosis — On 07-20-05 at 9:01 pm
Drug use also does not guarantee a person questioning status quo. Many of my friends do indeed smoke marijuana, but I’ve yet to see them come up with anything resembling anti-mind control.
In my opinion drug use is not good at all. I avoid taking any sort of medication, except for my asthma, if at all possible. I prefer to let my body deal with it. We have become dependent on drugs for healing when it isn’t necessary.
One could say you are thinking outside the box, but you’re still inside a box. Where do you think it ends?
